Mac OSX: How to take a screenshot

Bloody hell, this garbage ain't user friendly at all!

These save an image the desktop:

  • Command + Shift + 3
    Take a screenshot of the whole screen
  • Command + Shift + 4, then select an area
    Take a screenshot of the selected area
  • Command + Shift + 4, then Spacebar, then click a window
    Take a screenshot of a window

To copy it to the clipboard, use the Shift key with the combinations above.

In Leopard and later, the following keys can be held down while selecting an area:

  • Space
    Move the selected region
  • Shift
    Resize only one edge of the selected region
  • Option
    Resize the selected region with its center as the anchor point
