Win2k/WinXP/Vista/Win7: Fix STOP 0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

This can occur due to various reasons, but normally its because you've changed something recently which Windows doesn't know about yet.

Windows XP and SATA drives with AHCI enabled

Most common scenario I've seen is the use of AHCI in SATA drives (a BIOS setting) causing this to occur. This is because Windows XP is a decade old and does not ship with Intel's AHCI drivers.

Either way you'll need the drivers, which can be found here (x86 or x64).

a) Manual fix

  • Disable AHCI in the BIOS.
  • Install Windows.
  • Manually install the AHCI drivers.
  • After that, you can re-enable AHCI.

b) Slipstream AHCI drivers into Windows setup

If you do not have access to change the BIOS settings, then you can slipstream the AHCI drivers into the Windows XP setup.

For XP, you can use nLite. It's a great little piece of software thats free and comes with a bundle of options.

I've written a guide on how to do this as part of another tutorial. See the section "Slipstreaming Windows XP Installation Disc".

Note: Intel has now renamed AHCI ("Intel Matrix Storage Manager") technology to "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" (Intel RST). A list of other names here.

Using an external USB CD-Rom device to boot/install Windows

After installing Windows with an external drive, you may encounter this problem when rebooting.

See Microsoft KB883114 about how to fix it.

How a 500gb hard drive is actually 465gb...

I just installed a new 500gb harddrive and surprised to find it only contained 465gb. At first I thought it was the partitioning table, but then again it hasn't even been formatted yet.

Then I found a post on Wikipedia on how to calculate the capacity of a hdd. Motherfuckers. Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung, Toshiba and Hatachi and any other fucking harddrive brands past or present, you're all fuckers!

Metric Drive Capacity O/S measurement
Byte 500,000,000,000 B 500,000,000,000 B
Kilobyte 500,000,000 KB 488,281,250 KB
Megabyte 500,000 MB 476,837.16 MB
Gigabyte 500 GB 465.66 GB

By dividing the drive capacity by 1024, we get the actual reported value on the right column.

I'm sure some fat pig with fists made of ham in the marketing department or management decided to sell less space for more profit and everyone joined the bandwagon, making it an industry standard.

The same thing happens with ISP advertisements of the offered speed. They will advertise kilobits per second (1000 bits, kb/s) instead of kilobytes (1024 bytes, KB/s).

A small capitalisation which not many people notice. Yet another way corporations are screwing us over. Fucking fuckers.

Netgear DGN2000 Overheating Issues

Despite my dislike for Netgear routers (which have proven their unreliability and buggy-ness in the past with friends constantly having to restart their routers), I purchased the Netgear DGN2000.

Why? It was the only Wireless N-router with an ADSL modem that looked nice.

I purchased it in mid September and its currently been 2 months and 9 days since I've installed and used it. The device has been running every day and in a horizontal position.

Normally it runs very hot to the touch. So hot in fact that it heats up the wooden table that it sits upon. I've also seen some posts online that it browns the white sticker that is on the back of the device.

The issues started on a day where temperatures hit +35°C. The router would occasionally freeze up and require a reboot. Initially I thought it was my ISP, but then I realised it didn't happen when the air conditioning was on.

This wouldn't be so annoying if it happened every month or so, but it was starting to occur after every 5-10hrs of operation. Netgear peice of shit.

Netgear, apparently featured in a movie called Dogma.

I've left it standing vertically, and it definitely runs alot cooler than it did while running horizontally. Now it looks like crap and takes up more space than it should. I cant even get the 2nd antenna to point upwards since the power/ethernet cables are in the way.

The Netgear DGN2000 standing vertically and not able to fit in that gap.

Looking up this issue online returns quite a few number of posts which seem to display the same symptoms. The interesting ones are here:

Contacting support

I registered to Netgear to contact their support and let them know that their device is a hot pile of steaming shit. Upon their registration processed I was asked if I wanted to purchase one of their "service contracts".

WTF @ the pricing!? Extortionists!

I'll wait for their reply, but I don't think that they'll send me out another device that doesn't overheat anytime soon.

Until then, Netgear, I salute to you this wonderfully appropriate icecream in the middle of the Australian summer.

In the words of a great prophet Eddie Murphy (Delirious):
I could drop my icecream in a pile of shit and eat it.
I would be like "It's just sprinkles"

Warranty Expiration Period

*Update 8/1/2012* I should have written this sooner, but fuck their warranty blows!

Here's the deal.

  1. Send back busted router within 2 year warranty period. It had about 2 months to go before it expired.
  2. The router was sent off, the store kept my receipt because it was over 1 year ago.
  3. It took about two weeks before they sent me a replacement router! In the meantime, that means I bought a new Billion 7700N as a replacement (which has been wonderful!)
  4. I get my replacement DGN2000, let the device collect dust since I didn't need it anymore.
  5. Couple of weeks later, decided to give it to my girlfriend because her wireless G was slow. Set up the DGN2000 and it ran perfectly overnight.
  6. The next morning, I was greeted with a flashing power light. Was scorching hot, bricked itself and was unaccessible through any port, did not connect to ASDL or reboot at all.
  7. NetGear customer support was less than helpful. Spent 40 minutes waiting on call waiting and they did not bother supporting the product as the warranty period was over, even though I had just received a replacement and it was brand new!

Bottom line, NetGear will happily give you a broken product and pretend it didn't happen. Fuck them.

VMware massive harddrive lag after pausing/stopping guest

I've noticed that ever since the upgrade to v6.5.1, my laptop has had trouble hibernating.
It would just halt at "preparing to hibernate" and the disk would keep whirring.

After a bit of experimentation, I've realised that its not because of the hibernation processing screwing up, but the to the excessive harddrive activity after shutting down VMware.

The upgrade changed the way some harddrive options worked for the guest.
While the guest is running, any changes to the hdd would be kept in a "redo log" and processed when a snapshot is taken.

After running a guest for about an hour, this equates to ALOT of backlogged processing which takes a few good minutes to perform. Generally, a few good minutes which I dont have.

Luckily, it is quite easy to disable this feature.

Go to your virtual machine and make sure it is not suspended.
Edit the hard disk settings and go to "Advanced".
Click on "Independant" and ensure that "Persistant" is selected.
Save your settings and all should be well.

No real instructions provided by the source, but it let me figure out where to look.

Increase hard drive size for VMware disk

1. Open up command prompt.
2. Go to your installation of VMware (ie. "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Workstation")
3. Type: vmware-vdiskmanager -x sizeGb "filename"

Example
vmware-vdiskmanager -x 20Gb "K:\Virtual Machines\Kubuntu\vmware-vdiskmanager.exe"
4. Once you're done with that, use some software within the VM to change the partition size.
Linux generally have their own partition software within the setup CD/DVD, whereas Windows would have Acronis Disk Director or Partition Magic.

Personally I'd install Disk Director, because I've lost data on my actual computer before when using Partition Magic. Plus its now a Symantec product, which brings to mind the expression "the cure is worse than the disease".

Either way, the demo would work fine since its a VM.

*edit 30/03/2009*
I've noticed alot of people getting to this blog in hopes to find a way to stop VM ware from lagging your computer after you suspend a guest.

Google seems to be returning the wrong results as the menu contains a link to the right post.

You can find that post here.
