Lotus Notes: Open inbox on startup

I'm a bit confused as what Lotus Notes is supposed to be.

At first I thought it was an email client. Then it was supposed to  be a scheduling/calendar system with mail functionality built into it.

To set your inbox to show up at startup, you'll have to create a "bookmark" for it and then set it as "home page".

So now its starting to sound like a browser (and yes, it comes with its own browsing capabilities that nobody gives a rats ass about).

So how do you set it up?

  • Click on the "Open" menu.

  • Right-click on "Mail"
  • Select "Set Bookmark as Home Page"
  • Click "Yes" to confirm.

Proceed to beat your slack IT manager until he gets off his fat hairy arse and sets up a proper email client for your company.

Nobody likes using Lotus Notes, not even monkeys!

Oh by the way this was for Lotus Notes 8.5.

Lotus Notes: Disable SameTime chat tray icon

Even though I've disabled it as much as possible and I'm not even using it, there is no frikken option to remove it from the tray. Peice of shit!

Luckily, you can disable it by editing "plugin_customization.ini" in "C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Notes\framework\rcp".

Add the following line and it should no longer appear in the tray.

com.ibm.collaboration.realtime.application/useSystemTray=false

Lotus Notes: Change the default browser which links open up in

Sticking with Lotus Notes is like being content with using a stone wheel. I mean it might be slow and rough around the edges, but it still gets the job done and thats what matters... right...?

Well anyway, another day in the office, another trick learnt on this old dog. I still cant decide if I'm referring to my work PC or Lotus Notes, but I know that I'm really sick of links in Lotus Notes opening up in Internet Explorer 8.

Its uber slow to start on the even slower computer and every link I click reuses the same tab on IE8 (even when I've changed the stupid settings!!!) and I constantly have to keep clicking back.

Luckily, our miserable Lotus Notes does have an option to change the default program to open up internet links. Unfortunately, its stashed away under a series of convoluted menus.

  • In the menu, click "File"
  • "Preferences"
  • "Location Preferences ..."
  • Select the "Internet Browser" tab
  • Click the little dropdown arrow beside your current browser (Probably says "Microsoft Internet Explorer")image
  • Select "Other"
  • Click on the flashlight icon to find your browser executable.image
  • Remember to click "Save and close"

Now send yet another angry email telling your IT manager to get off his ass and do his job. That is to migrate from this ancient piece of shit to another email exchange system that isn't from the Genghis Khan dynasty.

Removing gigantic splash screen on Lotus Notes 8

Lets face it, Lotus Notes sucks.
Nobody likes it.

They keep trying to fix it, making it look nicer, run faster and do more things but in the end, it's just as lovable as a cripple without arms trying to push themselves on a one wheeled wheelchair up a flight of stairs.

Whats worse is that when you run that flaming heap of shit, it takes a really... long... time.
Normally, thats expected from the application with as much appeal as a sweaty obese transvestite panting heavily in a gimp mask.

But in version 8, they reached a whole new level of brain-fucked senselessness when they decided to make a splash screen that takes up 3/4 of the screen and REMAINS ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE until it has finished loading.

Thank you IBM for crippling my PC to a state of uselessness.
After a few times, it does get a little tiresome waiting for the loading screen to disappear.

To get rid of it, modify the shortcut to run "nlnotes.exe" instead of "notes.exe".
The next time you run the retarded redhead child of an email client called Lotus Notes, the splash screen should be gone.
